Today I went to Delaware park to meet the girls I was going to support in their goal to complete a 5k and participate in World Run Day.
Two other runners and myself were paired with these lovely ladies above. They were from various schools in the area and met through an afterschool program. They had matching pants, socks and sneakers on! We were stylin’!
After going to the happy hair tent and getting colors put in their hair and tattoos on their cheeks we did zumba for a little while to warm up then ran to the start line! We were first at the line! I don’t know when I’ll be able to say that again!
When the race started, we were soon engulfed by all the other girls and their buddy runners. Our group got split up and I stayed back with Kimora. We did a combination of walking and running, picking out different landmarks to run to. She looked like she was having a lot of fun. We talked about all the different dogs we saw being walked in the park, talked about how Delaware park got split up into three small parks, talked about school, family. One of the coolest things we found out about each other is that she is going to the grammar school I went to when I was her age! How crazy is that!?!
Another cool thing is that I got to do a mini science lesson during our run! Kimora asked “Why do we have wind?” – using my geology background I was able to explain to her about the winds working to alleviate temperature and pressure build-up in the atmosphere across the earth. That was so cool!
As we were approaching the finish line her mom joined in and ran with her. Kimora grabbed her finishers medal and I congratulated her.
It was so awesome to be a part of this and I loved being able to hang out with the girls! Can’t wait for next year!
